A PLACE FULL OF ADVENTURES

The mountain world around Zell am See-Kaprun is a paradise for summer family holidays. A total of 400 kilometres of well-marked and maintained hiking trails leads between the Pinzgauer Grasbergen and the mountains of the High Tauern – from a trip around the lake to a 3,000-metre alpine hike. The crystal-clear Lake Zell offers water activities for children and adults alike: boat rides, swimming in one of the many outdoor swimming pools or paddleboarding. There is a cycle route and an inline skating trail around the lake. Also, you can get from Kaprun to Zell am See on bike in a few minutes without much effort.

KRIMML WATERFALLS

You’ve probably heard about these waterfalls. The course of the Krimmler Ache river begins where the Großvenediger and Dreiherrenspitze glaciers “bleed” in summer. The mountain stream meanders through the beautiful Krimmler Ache Valley before plunging down a steep drop to the Upper Pinzgau, thus bringing the world-famous Krimml Waterfalls to life. With a height of 380 metres, they are the highest waterfalls in Europe, and they are not only stunningly beautiful, but also soothing and healing. The falls can be admired along a steep but well-maintained path winding through the forest along the entire length of the falls. The trail starts in the valley and about halfway through, you can visit a restaurant to get refreshments, before continuing to the top of the falls. On a hot summer day, you can freshen yourself with the water splashing on the rocks at one of several viewpoints. But the trip doesn’t end at the top of the waterfalls; continue on to the stunning alpine valley.

SUMMER CARD FULL OF BENEFITS

The real bonus is the Zell am See-Kaprun card, which every visitor who stays in one of the partner accommodation facilities can get. (Just ask about it at the hotel reception). The card offers free or discounted use of many attractions in the area.
This includes, for example, a free cable car or boat ride, therefore opening the way to other excursion destinations in the vicinity of the crystal-clear Lake Zell. The new mobility card is also practical. It allows guests to use all means of public transport in the region for free – out of love for comfort and for the good of nature.

KAPRUN MOUNTAIN RESERVOIRS

THE IMPRESSIVE WORLD OF WATER, ROCKS AND ELECTRICITY HIGH ABOVE ZELL AM SEE-KAPRUN
High above the Kaprun Valley, a miracle of technology arose in the post-war years. As they were built ahead of time, they have retained their mystical charisma to this day. The two mountain reservoirs above Kaprun almost seem like fjords. Especially so when the snow starts to melt in the spring. Then they get filled to the very edge and the turbines, hidden in the massive dam walls, run at full power. Electricity is produced in abundance at 2,040 metres above sea level in the mountains above Kaprun. Energy has been generated here for many decades. You can visit and admire this miracle of technology in the summer months for free thanks to the Summer Card. We definitely recommend a visit to the reservoirs!

BOAT TRIP ON LAKE ZELL

Where is the best view of the Zell am See peninsula? There is a place in Zell am See-Kaprun which offers the best view of the historic old town and its beautiful buildings, as well as of the alpine landscape beyond the town, the snow-capped mountains of the High Tauern and the lush green slopes of the Pinzgau Grass Hills. Enjoy unforgettable views and vistas of the region from the very special perspective on Lake Zell.

You can get on directly in the centre by the lower station of the new Connection cable car.

GROSSGLOCKNER HIGH ALPINE ROAD

When talking about driving on the Grossglockner, then it doesn’t mean driving on the country’s highest-situated summit. It means that a tour of the most beautiful road in the country, if not on the continent – Grossglockner High Alpine Road – is on the agenda. Starting in the Fuscher Valley in the Pinzgau District, it has been winding its way uphill into the high mountains only to wind downhill again towards Carinthia for 100 years. It is a vision that has become a reality through innovative, assertive men who have never gave up on their idea. This wonderful north-south connection via Fuscher Törl, the Hochtor and the Franz-Josef-Höhe has been open since 1935.

SIGMUND THUN GORGE

Over 30 metres deep and 320 metres long, the Kaprun Ache cuts its way through the Kaprun Valley here. And cutting is really the right term here. Released from the glaciers high above the Kaprun Valley, the Kaprun Ache makes its way inexorably towards the valley. Steep drops and altitude metres accelerate the speed and unleash the pure power of water, which literally cuts through the rocks. Nothing can stop this force, not even rocks and stones. It is this force with which the Kaprun Ache has formed the Sigmund Thun Gorge, located just outside Kaprun. The current cut a gorge in the rocks, creating distinct smooth sections and as well as potholes, waterfalls and lakes. This process continues to this day and documents the latest period in the history of the Kaprun Valley.

HISTORY, TECHNOLOGY AND NATURE IN THE REGION’S MUSEUMS

This is often seen as a holiday programme for rainy days or as an alternative programme. Why would you be interested in history, nature, technology or traditions only on rainy days? There are many interesting things to discover. The region has a long history, much has been developed and there are many old things that are worth preserving for future generations. Vötter’s Vehicle Museum is dedicated to old vehicles and mobility, while the Kaprun Museum offers a lot of interesting information about the 4,000-year-old history of the mountain town. The National Park Gallery and the National Park Museum in nearby Mittersill are museums offering adventure elements where you can learn more about the exciting world of the Hohe Tauern National Park.

VÖTTER’S OLDTIMER MUSEUM IN KAPRUN

The museum presents a unique and rare collection of vehicle history from the 1950s to the 1970s, the “years of the economic miracle” – older cars, tractors, motorcycles, cable cars, trucks, race cars, as well as radios, telephones and films are on display there. The museum exhibits vehicles ranging from the smallest cars, such as the Messerschmitt, to the largest convertible in the world, a steam locomotive from 1893, a flat decorated in the 1950s style and other rarities. The exhibition can be found right in the centre of Kaprun and covers an area of approx. 1,400 m2 with about 200 exhibits.

GOLF IN KAPRUN

The 36 most beautiful greens can be found between the glacier, the mountains and the lake at the Zell am See-Kaprun Golf Club. And this is true, because the fairways fit perfectly into the beautiful landscape of our region. Where the mountains meet the valley and where the view disappears in the blue Lake Zell, that’s where you can play golf on two excellent and attractive golf courses.
